How Does It Work?

Overview

SlashID is a JavaScript web application that uses the Google Web Toolkit (GWT). Users don't have to download any software, plugins or extensions to use SlashID.

SlashID stores an encrypted personal profile for each user and encrypted credentials for every site the user is registered with.

The key to decrypt all these data is the user's password, and it never leaves the user's computer.

SlashID never issues assertions and websites never rely on it to authenticate user information. Instead, SlashID allows the user's browser to decrypt registration information, which is sent directly to your website.

How does SlashID compare to OpenID?

The key difference is that SlashID provides an Identity Management service, without seeing a user's personal data. OpenID may be effective for blogs and lower security online transactions, but SlashID is appropriate for shopping and higher security transactions because we don't require the user and the website to trust us.

Users are uncomfortable putting trust in identity provider. When using SlashID, they can be sure that only they know their password. It lets them remain anonymous and feel comfortable creating profiles and registering on websites like yours.

SlashID is not yet de-centralized, but we are working on it. Right now, our system runs on JavaScript from our website. However, when browser plugins are widely available to support the SlashID protocol, we will become de-centralized.

If SlashID is down, can my users login?

SlashID is convenient and reliable. However, we know it's important to have a work-around for logins. If SlashID is not accessible, users can use your "forgot password" option to access a temporary password and login.
